CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN BERNARDINO

Projects

CPAL has a number of ongoing research projects. The breadth of this activity demonstrates the range of interests among program staff, as well as the important issues facing local communities. As these research projects are completed, reports and analyses will be made available to the public on a limited basis due to privacy considerations. For additional information on each project please email the associated researcher identifed by web mail links.

Commercial Burglary
This project involves merging crime data (calls for service and reports) with available community level data and information obtained through site surveys into an analysis of commercial burglary concentration and potential. The goal of this project is to identify environmental features associated with commercial burglary concentrations and then use these variables to forecast where future concentrations are expected. Project contact Dr. Gisela Bichler-Robertson.

Automobile Theft Forecasting
This project involves merging crime data, site level characteristics and available community level data into an analysis of automobile theft concentration. The intent is to determine whether there is a relationship between levels of opportunity for auto theft and crime concentration. This analysis will be used to forecast where future concentrations are expected. Project contact Marissa Potchak

Riverside County Crime Prevention Act (A.B. 1913)
Evaluation of Juvenile Crime Prevention Programs

Bridge Anti-gang Program
Geographical analyses will be performed for the BRIDGE evaluation in order to identify spatial features affecting the success of program clients. Included in this analysis will be juvenile offender mobility and proximity analysis.

Police Action Counseling Team (PACT)
The PACT or Family Violence Prevention Program operates in Coachella Valley and is fully supported by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. This program involves collaboration between the Sheriff's Department, contracted licensed mental health professionals, educators, county child protective services, mental health, and probation. Given the breadth of the area serviced and the limited resources available, the program evaluation being conducted by the faculty of CSUSB under the Criminal Justice Research Center will include a geographical analysis to control for geographic limitations.

Youth Accountability Teams
Three separate programs are included in this component of the Riverside Evaluation Project:Community-based Probation Diversion, Youth Court, and School Attendance Review Boards. Geographic analyses will be performed as part of the evaluation in order to identify spatial factors that improve or detract from program success rate.

For more information about the above programs contact Dr. Gisela Bichler-Robertson.

Securing Temporary Public Art Exhibits: From Cows to Mr. Potato Head
Public art by definition must be accessible to people unfortunately not everyone is intent on enjoying these images and sculptures peacefully. A variety of mechanisms can be employed to secure temporary exhibits. This project examines the environmental features associated with art that is damaged to those that remain untouched in an effort to inform future exhibits.
